The parting of the ways – is it now inevitable?
In recent years I have been disgusted by Gordon Brown’s attempt to lay the blame for the world recession at the feet of the Americans. For years he had been Chancellor and was then Prime Minister of the country that includes the City of London. It was ridiculous, shameful, electioneering: let’s blame someone else and vote for me again.
Today I am disgusted by Barack Obama. BP is not ‘British’ Petroleum. It is 40% owned by Americans. The rig was operated by an American company. It happened under US jurisdiction. And BP is not shirking its responsibilities. It is ridiculous, shameful, electioneering: let’s blame someone else and vote for me again.
Let us hope that the people of both nations are not taken in by the self-seeking rhetoric of their leaders. I have great sorrow for what is happening. I grieve for the American people, the wildlife and the environment. The ‘special relationship’ never really existed at the political level – but I think it has amongst our respective peoples. I would hate to think that this could be endangered by political expediency.
