Yahoo says my password is too weak

A lot of visitors searching for data on a Yahoo ‘password too weak’ issue end up on my own Password is too weak… page.

My own issue was with BT – but since there is a close relationship between BT and Yahoo, it may well be exactly the same problem. The answer lies within the comments on my earlier page. Put simply, the BT password rules exclude certain characters that get generated by password managers (such as vertical bars), and is limited to 16 characters.

If you go over 16 characters and include vertical bars then you get a ‘password too weak’ error when actually your password is being rejected because it is too strong.

I don’t use Yahoo so cannot confirm whether this is the same issue. However, if Yahoo is continually rejecting your password as ‘too weak’ it would be worth checking the small print; and perhaps limiting your password to 16 characters – and no vertical bars.

UPDATE
Judging by the comments, this is a more widespread issue with Yahoo than I suspected. Again, judging by the comments, if you’re having trouble updating or changing your password, it may be worth trying a different browser. If this doesn’t work, try changing the password via an Android or iOS app.

I had to delete all browser data in Safari and then suddenly it worked. An this although the Yahoo site had just 20 min before given me the message ” your account is locked for 24hrs”.
This is a mess. I can’t take Yahoo seriously and use them only as my “Spam Account”.

change browser from firefox to safari and it was solved.
it is because of the popup blocker. and your browser security.
you could as well stop the adblock plus or any adblocker you have installed.
    it work on safari.

The solution is to use an andriod or ios platform. In other words, use your phone or tablet. Using different browsers doesnt always work. After 1 week of arguing with yahoo customer services via my alternative email, I read the advice on this page and used my iphone 4s and IT WORKED!!! Hope this offers some help to others

Stupid f***ing Yahoo had me change my password a while ago, because it had something in my name (even though it doesn’t even closely resemble my name) and now they want fricking capital letters which I have never used in my passwords. My account just got disabled for 12 hours cause I could not figure out my password, and you can’t reset it for 12 hours even with security questions (I can’t do that anyway cause apparently you need an alternate email or phone number now)

Yahoo has clearly f***ed up which will eventually lead to it’s downfall… hopefully

Yahoo has the worst management in the Silicon Valley history. It’s a shame they still have a presence in the valley, well …. they’ll be there until people currently in their forties die, then no one will ever remember them. i am impatiently waiting for that day!

Mine is fixed now. I contacted Yahoo by using the paid services links in the Help section…they have buried their contact information in there. Tell them you have tried different browsers already (worth doing this first) and ask them to send you a new password. They will send you back a link to a couple of security check questions (if you’ve forgotten the answers you are stuffed!), and once you have done that you can ask for a new password. Although this will also require a password reset once you’ve used it, it’s a different page and it worked ok for me.

    Good luck!

If you go via the ‘paid services’ section of Yahoo help you will find a customer services email link. (you will have to dream up a paid service that you are ‘trying’ to subscribe to, e.g. flickr pro)

During the setup I created a new password. Then in chrome I just logged onto yahoo mail with the new password. DO NOT TRY AND RESET THE PASSWORD IN THE PC ENVIRONMENT. Fix the issue on your smart phone.

Others’ advice to try changing the password in a different browser (I tried Safari) did not work for me. Once again, nice people on the internet are more useful than company support.

I did have a fairly complicated password imput, the problem for me is that the ‘password strength’ bar (4 bar indicator) moves from weak to ‘in the red’ to in ‘weak’ in yellow and immediately to VERY strong. 8 letters including 1 capital letter and 1 number is the lowest I’ve gone – anyway, it says ‘very strong’ but when I hit enter it says it’s too weak. I find it hard to believe that would be considered too strong, even for crappy yahoo.

It seems like it’s telling me the password is too weak regardless of what the strength indicator says, like I will just never be able to enter the new password.
